For those following the antics of the Scranton School Board, this week they did not disappoint. Wednesday's meeting saw the majority directors slam through a 3.6% tax increase and a rushed appointment to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Paige Gebhardt Cognetti. The increase comes from a $5 million revenue shortfall that needed to be made up if the district was going to balance its $166 million in expenses. Directors divided along expected lines and the motion won passage in a 5-3 vote with Robert Casey, Barbara Dixon, Bob Lesh (BL!), Greg Popil, and Paul Duffy in favor and Kate Gilmartin, Mark...
The Scranton School Board voted Wednesday to raise property taxes by 3.6% and made an unexpected decision to appoint a new member. While the increase was on the agenda, the vote to name local businessman Gopal Patel to the seat left vacant by last week's resignation of Paige Gebhardt Cognetti was not....
There was no want of talent Thursday as the Scranton School Board selected from a pool of twelve (TWELVE!) candidates vying to fill the seat left vacant by the passing of Carol Oleski. We're too lazy to type all of the names but the school directors had their work cut out when it came to conducting interviews. In terms of standards, we know from his comments two weeks ago that Bob Lesh was not looking for another Einstein like Harvard grad Page Gebhardt Cognetti. In the end, both Paige and BL agreed on Greg Popil for the spot. Popil previously...

Scranton School District Superintendent Alexis Kirijan made the news this week and she was not happy. The Scranton Times-Tribune reports that in June Kirijan's attorney notified the School Board that his client had been sexually harassed by an unnamed school director. The superintendent is not happy about this public disclosure and wants to know who leaked the information. We usually take a tongue in cheek approach to the foibles of our friends at SSD, but in the age of #MeToo, there's no place for the kind of behavior Kirijan alleges. Our hope is someone gets to the bottom of it. Was President Donald...
